Profil
CANDIDATE PROFILE
- Medical or paramedical with field experience (min 2 years) and experience in nutrition in developing countries (experience with MSF is desirable).
- Specialisation or experience in paediatric nursing/medicine is an asset.
- Knowledge of French and English essential, other international languages (Spanish, Portuguese, Arab ...) is an asset.
- Training: Ability and motivation to train field staff.
- Flexible for regular field-visits
- Management & organisational skills
- Good writing skills
- Good team-spirit
- Familiarity with Excel and Epi-info are an advantage.

CONDITIONS
- Part-time contract (50%) over two years
- Based in Brussels (open for discussion) with regular field visits.

Description
CONTEXT
Nutrition is part of the core activities of MSF. With the introduction of ambulatory treatment for uncomplicated malnutrition, treatment of acute malnutrition can be integrated into all medical activities. We need to go in depth in the medical management of complicated acute malnutrition in order to adapt our practice and training of medical staff. Introduction of nutrition care in other hospital departments (surgery, ICU…) needs support and evaluation. We also need to continuously improve our monitoring of food security and surveillance systems and have this integrated into our project planning
Reference person for this position:
- The Medical Technical Coordinator
- You will work in close collaboration with the paediatricians, vaccination team and SRH team and on an ad-hoc way with the other experts from the medical department.
- The post's objectives, activities and functioning will be updated regularly with the medical director.
JOB PROFILE
Development and follow-up of nutritional programmes (40%).
To ensure efficacy and quality of our nutritional interventions, the nutrition expert:
- Provides technical support and advice to field teams, operation department, emergency pool for the nutritional / food security evaluations or surveys, development of strategies, and planning of nutritional programs.
- Helps to estimate resources needed and to develop protocols for programs set-up.
- Follows Early warning Systems (FEWS, FAO, Sahel...).
- Reads and comments on documents written by field teams.
- Answers technical questions specific to nutrition or food security coming from the field or headquarter.
- Monitors projects: helping to collect and analyse nutritional data from the field with regular feedback.
- Realizes field visits: program evaluation (general organization, quality of care, results and functioning indicators...), technical support for implementation (revision of protocols, coaching ...) with written reports of the visits including recommendations.
Orientation in nutrition (30%)
To disseminate and guide missions on our nutritional strategies and guidelines, the nutrition adviser:
- Carries out literature searches and establishes technical files on specific subjects (e.g. micronutrients, breast feeding, hospital feeding …).
- Follows the evolution of research in the field of nutrition by following scientific publications and participating in existing networks of nutritionists and specialists in food security in the world as well as insuring regular contacts with institutions like WHO, UNHCR, WFP, FAO and other organizations concerned by nutrition.
- Support new and existing research in nutrition.
- Participates, when required, in the MSF international working group meetings and discussions.
- Participate in thematic circles, medical meetings, Medco/Hom coordination week.
- Participate in building the briefing tools.
Training and follow-up (25%):
To ensure that national staff, field expatriates and HQ members get the appropriate and updated tools to set-up nutritional activities, the nutrition adviser:
- Continues to support, develop and implement training sessions (FLMT, PSP, retrospective and nutritional surveys, nutrition module in diverse trainings (log, HIV, SRH…).
- Supports MSF staff undergoing nutritional trainings with respect to answering technical questions and giving general guidance
- Does briefing / debriefing of medical & field coordinators, project medical referents, and sometimes medical doctors + nurses.
- Follows with pool managers, the evolution of expatriates with a nutrition profile.
Communication (5%)
To ensure a correct dissemination of information on our nutritional activities, the nutrition adviser:
- Supports the communication department in the development of communications concerning our nutritional activities and programs.
- Disseminates internally and externally documents / reports concerning our projects and strategies (nutrition surveys, nutrition projects)
