Description
Deadline: 8th January 2023
Based in: Friends of the Earth Europe office, Brussels
In February 2022, the European Commission released its proposal for a law on ‘corporate sustainability due diligence’ to end corporate abuse. The draft law is a milestone, but it also contains many loopholes. The coming year will be crucial to ensure that negotiations in the European Parliament, Council and the following trilogue with the Commission result in a strong and ambitious directive that puts people and planet before profits.
A large coalition of civil society and trade unions has decided to join forces. ‘Justice is Everybody’s Business’ is a new campaign to scale up people power to put pressure on EU governments and leaders to support the strongest possible law to end human rights violations and environmental harms by companies and guarantee remedy and justice for people everywhere. The campaign will raise public awareness and empower European citizens to engage in individual and collective action.
Among the priority topics for the JIEB campaign will be to ensure that there will be a strong and legally enforceable obligation on companies to reduce greenhouse emissions throughout their global value chains, and to strengthen the overall environmental obligations in the legislation. We plan activities that highlight and raise awareness for the need to have such climate obligations and we will build public pressure on decision makers at EU and member state level to introduce them.
Outline of the Climate Campaigner role
The climate campaigner will be employed by one of the campaign steering group’s organisations: Friends of the Earth Europe. The coordinator reports to the JIEB campaign coordinator and the coordinator of the Economic Justice program in FoE Europe.
Friends of the Earth Europe (FoEE) campaigns at the heart of Europe for sustainable and just societies and for the protection of the environment. We are the largest grassroots environmental network in Europe, uniting 32 national organisations with thousands of local groups as part of Friends of the Earth International. Our vision is of a peaceful and sustainable world, founded on social, economic, racial, gender and environmental justice and free from all forms of domination and exploitation.
Your tasks
We are looking for an experienced and highly motivated campaigner responsible for the development and implementation of campaign activities related to climate issues. You will be responsible for organising activities, events and actions as well as producing key communication materials related to climate and due diligence legislation, with the aim of growing the visibility and impact of the campaign.
While your priority lies with the climate issue, much of the work you will be involved in will be closely linked to other parts of the JIEB campaign including environment, human rights, access to justice and liability. Outreach to JIEB supporting organisations, at EU and member state level, and involving them in the campaign is also one of the main tasks.
You will work closely with the JIEB coordinator, campaigners and the communications teams of campaign steering group members and supporting organisations.
Your main tasks:
- contribute to the development of a coherent set of activities and messages related to the climate and environment angle of the JIEB, in collaboration with the JIEB coordinator, the steering group, working groups and supporting organisations;
- coordinate the implementation of campaign activities related to climate: action days, media stunts, twitter storms, a petition, etc.;
- contribute to and ensure coherence with the broader JIEB work: many activities will have climate as one (prominent) angle but also focus on other interrelated topics.
- support the functioning of the campaign structure: organise and facilitate meetings on climate plans, oversee and drive forward a climate work plan, in collaboration with the broader campaign, follow up on action points;
- regular communication with supporting organisations and working groups related to the climate angle of the JIEB, including supporting their national campaigns and acting as a bridge between different initiatives across the EU on this topic;
- develop ways to increase the visibility of the campaign in cooperation with the communications teams of the steering group and supporting organisations;
- manage administrative matters and keep track of budget expenditures under the campaign’s climate funding.
