Climate Action Network Europe is looking for a
Head of Communications
CAN Europe, Europe's largest coalition working on climate and energy issues, is currently seeking an experienced and dynamic Head of Communications to join our team in Brussels. This position will offer the successful candidate an opportunity to be at the center of the largest movement for global change that will affect people and the planet for centuries to come.
Required Educational/professional qualifications:
- Minimum 5 years relevant professional experience, preferably in journalism/press or media relations;
- University degree or equivalent qualification preferably in communications, journalism or public relations;
- Working knowledge of EU institutions and processes, and in particular of climate, energy and environment policy;
- Journalism or media training considered an asset;
- Native level written and spoken English; additional EU languages considered an asset.
Preferred/desirable qualifications
- Experience of working with NGO’s
- Knowledge or experience with coal campaigning
Experience, skills and abilities
- Experience writing, editing and proofreading, with a proven ability to manage the production of various types of high quality print and digital media products;
- Experience in line management of a small team
- Knowledge of, and existing base of contacts with European news media desirable;
- Demonstrable experience of using digital and social media to achieve campaign/advocacy objectives;
- Ability to prioritise and manage diverse tasks, meeting deadlines while maintaining high editorial standards;
- Experience of working in a network; internal communication skills desirable;
- A good team player coupled with ability to be self-reliant and self-disciplined, and use one’s own initiative and to generate new communication ideas;
- Solid grounding in Microsoft Office applications.
Main duties will include:
- Responsible for external communications;
- Writing, editing and dissemination of press releases and other documents, responding to media enquiries;
- Organising production and editing of paper and digital publications; liaising with policy officers to generate online web articles;
- Manage content and updates to the website (www.caneurope.org);
- Maintain a contact databases of experts and journalists;
- Cataloguing and maintaining CAN Europe’s media coverage;
- Descriptive reporting to funding organisations;
- Develop/liaise and maintain contacts with the media and where necessary act as a spokesperson for CAN Europe.
This position is based in the CAN Europe secretariat, which houses our team of 21 staff members, in Mundo-B, the sustainable NGO office space near the St. Boniface neighborhood of Brussels. The bright, sunny office provides an exciting work environment with a restaurant serving organic food, an outdoor terrace, two gardens and plentiful bike-parking spaces.
This position is full time and based on a Belgian open-ended contract. Remuneration for the job will be between 3.550 and 4.450 Euro gross/month, depending on the years of relevant experience (from 0 to 20 years) and subject to Belgian taxes. Extra benefits include lunch and other vouchers, phone compensation & reimbursement of local transport costs.

Position/Title
Head of Communications
Goal of Position
Responsible for external communications (press, public, and relevant stakeholders) and developing and implementing of the communication strategy.
Functions &
Responsibilities
Communications and Editorial
- Responsible for ensuring CAN Europe communications maintain our profile as the leading European climate network.
- Responsible for ensuring high editorial standards of all CAN Europe publications and other products (written and visual);
- Cataloguing and maintaining CAN Europe’s publications;
- Assisting, as required, with the organisation and management of press briefings, conferences and other CAN Europe events;
- Contribute to relevant reporting and fundraising efforts, including all aspects of producing the annual report;
- Liaising with consultants to ensure printing and delivery of CAN Europe publications and campaign materials.
- Leading on all public facing campaigning work (i.e., publicity stunts) in direct coordination with the involved policy officer
Digital Communications and IT
- Updating website content using Joomla CMS, including; uploading documents; commissioning, creation and editing of web content;
- Monitoring website traffic;
- Maintaining and regularly updating our social media channels;
- Managing work with external web and IT consultants.
Media and Press
- Writing, editing and dissemination of press releases;,
- Responding to media enquiries and building contact with journalists;
- Maintain CAN Europe’s media profile and ensure coverage is accurate;
- Cataloguing and maintaining CAN Europe’s media coverage;
- Updating press contact lists in civiCRM database;
- Ensure relevant staff are prepared and trained for dealing with the media.
Networking
- Responsible for co-ordination of communications activities with the wider CAN network (i.e., participation in the CAN Comms working group);
- Maintain and update the CAN Europe communications list;
- Participate in meetings and activities with partner organisations (e.g. Green 10, Coalition for Energy Savings), when necessary.
- Prepare, present and moderate during communications-related sessions at the CAN Europe General Assembly (2x/year)
Input to internal affairs
- Participate in team-wide processes and matters relevant to the organisation as a whole as required
- Work on other projects as assigned by the line manager
Supervisory responsibilities
- Line manage the Communication team
- Liaison with external contractors (IT, website, editing,..)
- Providing support and guidance to team members trough regular meetings and evaluations
- Ensure exchange and updates on relevant processes and activities
- Define together with Director and team members the priorities and strategies of the team.
