Avocats Sans Frontières (ASF)
ASF is an independent non-governmental organization. Its mission is to independently contribute to the creation of fair and equitable societies through the promotion of access to justice, in which the law and its institutions serve society’s most vulnerable groups. The organization aims to realize this objective through field interventions in the field of law in general, and in the area of legal and judicial assistance in particular.
ASF has its headquarters in Brussels and 5 offices in Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda and Tunisia. ASF also has a permanent representative in Tanzania, Chad and Morocco.
ASF has been implementing access to justice projects in post-conflict and fragile settings for over twenty years. Our key objectives are:
- Improving access to justice for people in vulnerable situations (using the human rights AAAAframework of availability, accessibility, acceptability and adaptability);
- Improving legal aid mechanisms;
- Strengthening capacities of lawyers and other key actors (including NGOs, civil society organizations and bar associations);
- Improving legal and normative framework and policies.
Duties
Under the supervision of the Access to Justice Expert, Avocats Sans Frontières is recruiting one intern to undertake the following specific tasks:
- Conduct research and analysis in French and English on legal aspects;
- Prepare research paper on Access to Justice Mechanisms (paralegals status, Alternative dispute resolution, Mobile courts, etc.);
- Insure a legal and judicial monitoring in countries of intervention;
- Participate to the follow-up of projects activities linked with the access to justice area;
- Do some translation works ;
- Support the Access to Justice Expert in her daily tasks.
Requirements
- Master in law or political science
- Excellent research, writing and methodological skills
- Fluent in English with an excellent knowledge of French
- Attention to detail
Duration
The internship will take place over a minimum period of three months, ideally from 15 January 2015.
Conditions
- The intern will receive € 8 per working day to cover his/her transportation and meal expenses.
- A part of transport costs can be covered by ASF for the interns who do not live in Brussels.
- ASF does not provide health insurance.
