Position/Title
Head of Communications
Goal of Position
Responsible for external communications (press, public, and relevant stakeholders), for developing and implementing the communication strategy and for the management of the Communications Team.
Functions &
Responsibilities
Communications and Editorial
- Responsible for ensuring CAN Europe communications maintain our profile as the leading European climate network;
- Providing strategic comms guidance to the organisation and leading on narratives work;
- Responsible for ensuring high editorial standards of all CAN Europe publications and other products (written and visual);
- Cataloguing and maintaining CAN Europe’s publications;
- Assisting, as required, with the organisation and management of press briefings, conferences and other CAN Europe events;
- Contribute to relevant reporting and fundraising efforts, including all aspects of producing the annual report;
- Liaising with consultants to ensure printing and delivery of CAN Europe publications and campaign materials;
- Leading on all public facing campaigning work (i.e., publicity stunts) in direct coordination with the involved policy officer;
- Work on other projects as assigned by the line manager.
Digital Communications and IT
- Maintaining and boosting CAN Europe social media presence and reputation, as well as in other channels and tools, such as the website and podcast, by commissioning or creating relevant content and monitoring traffic and impact;
- Managing work with external web and IT consultants.
Media and Press
- Keeping a personal connection with press contacts and contributing to the organisation’s positive perception by the press
- Writing, editing and dissemination of press releases and information for journalists;
- Responding to media enquiries and building contact with journalists;
- Maintain CAN Europe’s media profile and ensure coverage is accurate;
- Cataloguing and maintaining CAN Europe’s media coverage;
- Updating press contact lists in our database;
- Ensure relevant staff are prepared and trained for dealing with the media.
Networking
- Responsible for co-ordination of communications activities with the wider CAN network (i.e., participation in the CAN Comms working group);
- Maintain and update the CAN Europe communications list;
- Proactively participate in meetings, activities and events with partner organisations (e.g. Green 10, Coalition for Energy Savings, Croissant Conspiracy), and other stakeholders, including donors;
- Prepare, present and moderate during communications-related sessions at the CAN Europe General Assembly (2x/year).
Management responsibilities
- Attend the regular meetings with the other managers convened by the Director in order to deal with issues in a cross-cutting manner throughout the organisation;
- Assist in the management of human resources and office;
- Sign-off comms plans and public communication products from the organisation;
- Support and advice strategic coordination of CAN Europe’s fundraising efforts;
- Advice and assist the functioning of the CAN Europe secretariat’s budget;
- Line manage staff members of the Communication team;
- Provide guidance to team members through regular meetings and evaluations and support them in their files/projects/campaigns work as well as in their second competences;
- Actively engage in the recruitment of staff in the Communication team;
- Liaison with external contractors (IT, design, website, editing,..)
- Ensure exchange and updates on relevant processes and activities
- Define together with Director and team members the priorities and strategies of the team.
- Participate in team-wide processes and matters relevant to the organisation as a whole as required

Description
Climate Action Network Europe is looking for a
Head of Communications
CAN Europe, Europe's largest coalition working on climate and energy issues, is currently seeking an experienced and dynamic Head of Communications to join our team in Brussels. This position will offer the successful candidate an opportunity to be at the center of the largest movement for global change that will affect people and the planet for centuries to come.
The successful Head of Communication should be experienced in providing strategic communication guidance ensuring the development of narratives, strategies and key messages for advocacy and campaign work not only in the secretariat but also across the entire Network. As the leader of CAN Europe’s Communications team, he or she will line-manage a very diverse team composed of about 8 very dynamic communication professionals.
Required Educational/professional qualifications:
- Minimum 5 years relevant professional experience, preferably in journalism/press or media relations;
- University degree or equivalent qualification preferably in communications, journalism or public relations;
- Working knowledge of EU institutions and processes, and in particular of climate, energy and environment policy;
- Experience in leading a communication team;
- Journalism or media training considered an asset;
- Native level written and spoken English; additional EU languages considered an asset.
Preferred/desirable qualifications
- Experience of working with NGOs;
- Experience of managing individuals and a team;
- Knowledge in team development.
Experience, skills and abilities
- Experience in developing and guiding a communications strategy;
- Experience in managing, guiding and coordinating diverse inputs and contributions for many different strands of communication work simultaneously in a fast paced work environment;
- Experience writing, editing and proofreading in English, with a proven ability to manage the production of various types of high quality print and digital media products;
- Ability to prioritise and deliver diverse tasks, meeting deadlines while maintaining high editorial and management standards;
- Knowledge of, and existing base of contacts with European news media desirable;
- Demonstrable experience of using digital and social media to achieve campaign/advocacy objectives;
- Experience of working in a network; internal communication skills desirable;
- A good team player coupled with ability to be self-reliant and self-disciplined, inspire others and use one’s own initiative and to generate new communication ideas;
- Solid grounding in Microsoft Office and Google suite applications.
Main duties will include:
- Responsible for ensuring CAN Europe communications maintain the profile as the leading European climate network;
- Responsible for external communications including ensuring high editorial standards of all CAN Europe publications and other comms products;
- Responsible to guide communications strategy and input into CAN Europe’s overall strategy;
- Responsible to line-manage CAN Europe’s comms team;
- Assist the Director and engage into the overall management of the organization;
- Writing, editing and dissemination of press releases and other documents, responding to media enquiries;
- Organising production and editing of paper and digital publications; liaising with policy officers to generate online web articles;
- Manage content and updates to the website (www.caneurope.org);
- Maintain a contact databases of experts and journalists;
- Maintaining CAN Europe’s media coverage;
- Descriptive reporting to funding organisations;
- Develop/liaise and maintain contacts with the media and where necessary act as a spokesperson for CAN Europe.
CAN Europe’s offer :
This position is based in the CAN Europe secretariat (Brussels), which houses the majority of our team, in Mundo-B, the sustainable NGO office space near the St. Boniface neighborhood of Brussels. FYI other members of the team are based in other European countries.
This position is based on a Belgian open-ended contract. Remuneration for the job will be between 4750 and 5550 Euro gross/month depending on the years of relevant experience (from 5 to 20 years) and subject to Belgian taxes. Meal vouchers (7EUR/working day), transport costs, eco and culture vouchers, phone computer, and teleworking allowance are also part of the salary package.
