REQUIREMENTS
Education & Experience:
- Essential secondary education/diploma
- Degree in social sciences, social communication or teaching
- Training in interpretation or intercultural mediation is an asset
- Minimum two years’ experience in similar position, preferably with NGOs
- Previous experience in migration/refugee contexts is an asset

Description
Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international humanitarian aid organization that provides assistance in more than 60 countries to populations in distress, to victims of natural or manmade disasters and to victims of armed conflicts, without discrimination and irrespective of origin, religion, creed or political affiliation.
Arabic and Tigrinya Intercultural Mediator (m/f/x) MSF Belgium – Brussels

CONTEXT
MSF's mission in Belgium aims to address, through a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach, the health needs and key social determinants of the most vulnerable segments of the population, including migrants in transit and undocumented migrants, while proactively engaging in assessing main difficulties and promoting institutional change.
MSF’s mission in Belgium:
- Active participation in the Humanitarian Hub, where several organizations provide a wide range of services to vulnerable populations. In this structure, mental health care (first line) is provided by Médecins Sans Frontières. A second line service has also been created to provide psychological follow-up and respond to identified needs.
- Outreach activities are designed to reach and support the most vulnerable populations. The mobile team intervenes in non-accredited structures (such as squats), informal settlements and hot-spots of gathering for the target populations in terms of: awareness-raising, primary health care consultations on site, prevention and control of infections, health promotion and referral to psycho-social-medical care.
MAIN PURPOSE
Supporting the communication and interaction between beneficiaries (migrants and refugees) and care providers in the host country, through addressing consequences of language barriers, socio-cultural differences and discrimination, following MSF protocols and procedures, to improve access to quality health care and other relevant services and providing MSF with an understanding of local socio-cultural determinants.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Facilitating the relation between patients and the care providers involved in medical consultations, mental health and social worker sessions, etc. through:
- Providing quality and culturally sensitive interpretation between the care providers and the patient (trialogue) in his/her mother tongue (source language / target language), supporting intercultural awareness, sensitiveness and clear communication between the parties
- Assisting care providers and patients in addressing negative consequences of socio-cultural differences, to support the therapeutic/social intervention through sharing with the care providers relevant aspects of the cultural background of the patient, acting as a cultural broker. Identifying and reporting barriers impairing fairness and equality in access to services.
- Accompanying and following up beneficiaries to referrals (health and social care facilities) as needed.
- Participating in case management meetings medical meetings.
- Working in close collaboration with any care provider to use appropriate terminology and behavior during consultations.
- Participating actively in the welcoming of patients in MSF Clinic.
Together with relevant project team members, providing information to beneficiaries on the use of the health care system and other support services (shelter, food, transport, legal support) provided by MSF and the network trough:
- Identifying and appropriately refer patients who need medical or mental health assistance
- Providing psychological first aid to identified community members in need.
- Ensure that all patients attending MSF activities are well informed about services provided
Contributing to context understanding and data collection on medical/humanitarian issues through:
- Ensuring quality linguistic and intercultural interpretation during the collection of testimonies for advocacy/ communication purposes.
- Supporting administration of assessments/ surveys.
- Reporting all important information expressed by the beneficiaries and the communities, ensuring confidentiality at all times
- Supporting media reviews and content creation for communication
- Translate documents in required language if required.
** When requested supporting other MSF activities (HP activities, NFI distribution, crowd control, etc.)

CONDITIONS
- Expected starting date: As soon as possible
- Location*: Brussels (Belgium)
- Contract type: Fixed-term contract 60% (4 months contract- possible extension)
- Salary according to MSF-OCB HQ grid – Hospital Insurance (DKV) – Pension Plan – 100% reimbursement for public transportation cost – Lunch allowances
