Qualifications
- Registered nurse
- 3 years field experience with MSF or a comparable organization in developing countries
- Experience in clinical and management roles in primary and secondary healthcare
- Experience in paediatrics/neonatology - ICU/ER - wound care
- Good oral and written communication in English and French.

- Training skills: experience in coaching and training of staff.
- Analytical skills (i.e. assessment - analysis - action plan)

Conditions
- Fixed-term contract 9 months - Full-time
- Based minimum 70% in the field and the rest of the time at OCB HQ Brussels
- Field position : salary according to MSF-OCB Field salary scale, legal leaves + “recuperation” leaves

Description
Context
Following the operational trends that include bigger hospitals with increased number of beds, volume of activities, complexity of care and a higher level of technicality, OCB wants to invest in ensuring adequate, sustained and good quality nursing care.
The MIO Nursing Care will provide direct technical support to nurses in the field, in strict collaboration with the Nursing Care referent.
She/he will be in charge of assessing the nursing care practices in the field and giving guidance and support for implementing nursing care best practices in line with OCB recommendations, protocols and guidelines.
Job Profile
In order to improve the quality and safety of nursing care, the MIO Nursing Care will :
1. Assess the current nursing care practice in the project, in collaboration with the concerned people and with special attention to:
- general overview of the unit/service: unit structure - general material - medical equipment - staff safety and confort - patient safety and confort.
- supervision of activities at unit level: nursing HR management - nursing activities - knowledge management - learning and competencies development - follow up of the quality of care/nursing indicators - end-user pharmacy management (GPP protocol/policy).
- clinical nursing care: patient admission and discharge - patient information management - medical round - patient observations - basic patient nursing care - medications administration - IV line management - pressur ulcers - patient feeding - urinary catheter - pain management - peri-operative care - wound care - emergency/critical cases.
2. Compile and analyse the results of the assessment, always in collaboration with the concerned people, in order to identify gaps in the curent nursing care practice in the project.
3. Support the field nursing team in preparing an improvement plan which includes:
- specific objectives;
- clear priotities;
- a comprehensive strategy;
- tools for the correct deployment of the strategy.
4. Set-up a follow-up plan which includes:
- guidance for the field team for regularly assessing nursing care practices;
- promotion of correct use of tools for monitoring the evolution of the quality and safety of the patient care with standard indicators.
The MIO Nursing Care will support the field during the deployment of new protocols, guidelines and medical devices/material linked to nursing care. He/she will:
- help projects in adapt strategies and tools for training and competencies development of nursing staff;
- give advices on how to plan changes in practices due to new protocols, guidelines and medical devices/material in order to maximaxie the positive impact on the quality of care and minimize risks
- propose follow-up strategies to monitor the impact of those deployment on the nursing care provided to our beneficiaries.
Following the continuous development of specialized nursing care in the field, the MIO Nursing Care will support projects in specific topics such as:
- Neonatal care (NICU, step-down and kangaroo mother care);
- Paediatric care (PICU and paediatric care);
- Emergency care (ER and in-hospital emergency care);
- Intensive care (ICU level 1-2-3).
As MSF hospital based projects are increasing in number, size (in terms of beds and staff) and level of care, the MIO Nursing Care will:
1. Support Ward Head Nurses in:
- implementing MSF nursing care protocol and hygiene procedures;
- organizing and coordinating care activities;
- managing human resources (at unit level);
- managing the end-user pharmacy;
- assessing and improving nurses technical competencies.
2. Support Nursing directors in:
- planning and organizing all nursing related activities;
- coordinating and supervising the implementation of MSF protocol and guidelines;
- ensuring administrative procedures and documentation;
- supervising the management of pharmacy and biomedical ctivities (in cooperation wothall other relevant actors);
- planning and supervising all HR related process (recruitment, training, evaluation, etc..);
- monitoring the overall quality and safety of the nursing care provided to patients.
